Decoherence is the irreversible emergence of classical properties
for a quantum system through its interaction with environmental degrees
of freedom.
In my talk, I shall give a general introduction into this
important concept and present the essential theoretical ideas as well as
recent experimental results. I also clarify the relevance of decoherence
for the interpretation of quantum theory and for the origin of the
arrow of time.
