How to apply to MSc/PhD in Bonn

Students who do not prefer to apply for the BCGS honors branch, but want to undergo a MSc course in physics or astrophysics at Bonn University (former BIGS program) can apply via this page. We ask you to carefully read the following information. It is necessary to send us all required documents as stated below in time. Please make sure to send the application package only if it is complete, otherwise we will not be able to process your application. We also award a limited number of fellowships you can apply for (please use the statement of purpose to reason the application for financial support)

Students who want to take the MSc course (the former BIGS programme) or take a PhD in Bonn, but do not want to apply to the BCGS honors branch, can apply as outlined on this page.

Required Documents for PhD studies before entering the PhD program:

PhD candidates don’t need to meet any deadline

  • Completed Application Form
  • Photo, Statement of purpose
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • All degrees/all academic records (certified)
  • Recommendation letters (min. 2) in a sealed envelope or by email provided
    that the referee use his/her corresponding university/institute account for doing so.


Required Documents for the Master Program:


  • Completed Application Form
  • Application for admission to the Eligibility Assessment procedure (Astrophysics)
    or Application for admission to the Eligibility Assessment process (Physics)
  • Photo, Statement of purpose
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • All degrees/all academic records (certified)
  • TOEFL-Test 80 points internet-based (course language is English)
  • Recommendation letters (min. 2) in a sealed envelope or separately to our
    Email address (accepted if the email address belongs to an University account)

Deadlines 2013:

1st of May for the winter term (Non-EU students)
1st of July for the winter term (German and EU-students)

The decision about the participation in one of the programs will be made by the selection committee. You will be informed about the decision of the selection committee approximately 4 weeks after the deadline.

Please note that enrolments for Master programs are only possible for the winter term.
