How to apply for the MSc or PhD programme in Cologne

 

Application MSc program

Applicants with a German (Bachelor) degree may apply directly to the admission committee for the master course in Physics:

All applicants with a foreign (Bachelor) degree apply through the portal of uni-assist e.V. These applications are collected through uni-assist e.V., are verified for formal accuracy, and finally passed on to the admission committee for the Physics Master course for final verification. uni-assist e.V. is an association founded by the German universities, which takes care of the technical processing of applications.

15 January
for winter term: 15 July

Requested Documents for Application

The admission committee requires certified copies of the following documents in order to be able to verify your application:

  • Letter of Motivation
  • School leaving certificate (or an equivalent degree of qualification for access to
    German universities
  • Bachelor-degree (or an equivalent university degree).
  • A German Bachelor degree can be handed in later
  • Transcript of Records
  • Proof of English language skills: minimum score 80 (TOEFL Internet-based Test)
    or comparable proof

Formal degree certificates not yet available when you apply can be handed in later.

Applicants with a foreign school and university degree need to send also: Certified translation of degrees unless they exist in German or English. Please send certified translation of degree certificates that are not in English or German.

Application for the PhD program

The first step towards the PhD is to find a PhD supervisor. One way is to contact directly one (or several) of the professors or research group leaders. In case you are not sure which research group to join, you are welcome to apply via the BCGS office in Cologne.


Please provide the following documents:

  • Statement of purpose
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • All degrees/all academic records (certified)
  • Recommendation letters (min. 2) in a sealed envelope or by email provided that
    the referee use his/her corresponding university/institute account for doing so.

In most of the cases, PhD candidates can apply throughout the year (even if no PhD positions are advertised).
