Overview
The lecture will introduce elementary concepts of solid state theory, including- introduction to lattice structures
- lattice and electron dynamics
- phonons
- electrons on a lattice (non-interacting)
- electron-electron interaction
Tutorials
Tutorials and homework assignments will start in the first week of the winter term and will be held every other Friday morning (in lieu of the lecture).Assignments
- sheet 0: crystal structures with VESTA, reciprocal lattices and Brillouin zones, Wigner-Seitz cells
- sheet 1: Fourier transformation, δ-function, covalent bonds
- sheet 2: diatomic chain, phonons in python
- sheet 3: specific heat of phonons, Debye model
- sheet 4: Kronig-Penney model, perturbation theory
- sheet 5: tight binding chain, diatomic tight binding chain, Peierl's instability
- sheet 6: Kronig-Penney model revisited, tight binding model
- sheet 7: Haldane model

- part 0/1: Motivation, Solids: Crystaline solids, crystal structures and classification, reciprocal lattice, scattering
- part 2: Born-Oppenheimer / adiabatic approximation: decoupling of electron and ion dynamics
